About Us: International Renewable Energy Systems. (IRES) is a sustainable energy solutions company with a vision to facilitate the transition of a million homes, businesses, and communities to clean energy by 2050. We are dedicated to developing cutting-edge technologies and deploying solutions that harness renewable resources to address the world’s energy needs while minimizing environmental impact.  Our current focus is on the development of the IRES Windmine, a vertical axis wind turbine tailored to meet the unique demands of central Alberta’s climate and microgeneration needs, as well as those of northern communities in the Prairies and the Northwest Territories.

Job Description: We are seeking a skilled Electrical Engineer with expertise in control systems to join our dynamic team and play a key role in the development of the IRES Windmine through its pre-commercialization phase.  The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in electrical engineering, particularly in the design and implementation of control systems, and demonstrate a commitment to innovation and sustainability.

Responsibilities:

  1. Lead the design and development of electrical and control systems for the IRES Windmine, collaborating closely with IRES technology development director and third-party contractors to integrate electrical and control systems components seamlessly into the turbine design.
  2. Utilize expertise in control theory to optimize the performance and efficiency of the wind turbine, ensuring reliable operation under varying wind conditions and environmental factors.
  3. Design and implement safety features and fail-safes to protect both the turbine and surrounding infrastructure from potential hazards.
  4. Provide technical inputs into the turbine system integration strategy enabling seamless interconnection (hybrid) design with other renewable energy (e.g. solar) and storage (e.g. battery) systems.
  5. Conduct thorough testing, validation, and certification of electrical and control systems, identifying and addressing any issues or inefficiencies to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements.
  6. Provide technical support throughout the pre-commercialization phase, working closely with third-party contractors to refine and iterate on the design as needed.
  7. Stay informed about advancements in renewable energy technology and industry best practices, incorporating new findings and innovations into the development process where applicable.
  8. Contribute to the documentation and reporting of project progress, findings, and recommendations, ensuring clear communication with internal stakeholders and external partners.

Qualifications:

  1. Bachelor’s degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a related field
  2. Proven experience in the design and implementation of electrical systems, with a focus on control systems and automation.
  3. Familiarity with industry-standard software tools for electrical design, simulation, and programming (e.g., MATLAB/Simulink, LabVIEW, PLC programming).
  4. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues and propose effective solutions.
  5. Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively in a multidisciplinary team environment.
  6. Experience in the renewable energy sector is preferred, particularly with wind turbine systems.
  7. Master Electrician certification or equivalent practical experience is highly desirable.

Benefits:

  1. Competitive salary commensurate with experience
  2. Comprehensive benefits package, including employment insurance (EI) and retirement/pensions plan (CBP).
  3. Opportunities for professional development and career advancement in a rapidly growing industry.
  4. A collaborative and inclusive work environment that values innovation, sustainability, and teamwork.
